Life Skills They Should Teach You In School - Show #90

standby="Loading Microsoft Windows Media Player..." type="application/x-oleobject">

Kent Healy was born in San Jose, CA. At age ten his family moved to New Zealand where he lived for the next eight years before returning to California to finish up his education.

Kent started his first business, Reactor Board Tech, with his younger brother, Kyle, at age 15. Reactor manufactured skim boards, skate boards, t-shirts and other products that were sold in various surf shops in New Zealand.

Reactor also made Kent realize that he was not getting taught some very important life-skills in school. To address this problem, he partnered with his brother at age 17 to write his first book, “Cool Stuff” They Should Teach In School.

Since the book was released in 2005, the overwhelming positive feedback has driven Kent to establish a publishing company called “Cool Stuff” Media, Inc. (CSM) (www.coolstuffmedia.com) .

“We’re starting a movement to motivate and educate young people and parents across the United States,” said Kent. CSM was incorporated by Kent and Kyle to provide the missing link between what young people are taught in school and what they need to know in order to succeed in today’s complex world.

Today, Kent is creating a unique line of personal growth material for teens and young adults. He appears in the media regularly for TV and Radio interviews. Kent frequently travels to speak to audiences of all ages and backgrounds and he is dedicated to helping others by offering them the tools they need to build a life they are proud of.

Lauren Powers ( www.laurenpowers.net) is an executive coach and leading expert in organizational and individual learning.

Powers travels the world speaking and consulting with her Fortune 500 clients on "Self Smarts.” She is also a senior faculty member with the international Coaches Training Institute and is the author of The Trouble with Thinking: The Dangerous Trip from In the Head to Out the Mouth which explores how our perceptions create our realities.

With over 20 years of experience, Powers specializes in assisting her clients in uncovering how their individual habits of thinking do not always move them forward. Powers draws on the latest research in neuroscience and psychology as she illuminates the way that our emotions, judgments, environments and even our biochemistries can affect us. The choices we make, at home and in the office, are based on this "thinking.” When we understand how our thinking works, we have deeper insights, make more balanced decisions, and are powerful communicators.

Powers’ client list includes some of the most respected companies in the world: Marriott Hotels, IBM, Royal Bank of Scotland, CSC, Verizon, BP, ING, and Johnson & Johnson. Powers, a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) and a Master Certified Coach (MCC), supports people in uncovering their “Self Smarts” so they can choose how they interpret information, how they react to other people, and how to own their thinking instead of letting it own them. She lives in San Francisco.

Lauren answered the following questions:

Why did you write this book?

What IS the trouble with thinking?

How is automatic thinking a problem?

How does automatic thinking work? What are the steps to it?
