Phillip Mills is Chairman and Founder of Les Mills International
(www.lesmillsusa.com).
Les Mills International was started in 1997 on the back of BODYPUMP®, a weights-training class that has become the biggest branded group fitness class in history. Les Mills International now offers seven branded group-fitness programs in more than 10,000 clubs in 55 countries, with an estimated four million participants a week.
Phillip was born into the fitness industry. His father, Les Mills, represented New Zealand as a four-time Olympic finalist in the discus. With his wife Colleen, Les Mills opened a gym in Auckland, New Zealand , that grew to a successful nationwide chain.
Phillip carried on the family tradition by representing New Zealand at two Commonwealth Games, and won a track scholarship to UCLA. While in California, Phillip observed the early years of the aerobics boom, and further developed the group-exercise concept when he joined the family business in New Zealand.
Phillip’s approach to group fitness - high-performance instructors, upbeat music and inspirational workouts – was an instant success and drove the expansion of the Les Mills clubs across New Zealand.
